 Volunteering Week

Picnic in the Park - 7th June 2008Picnic in the Park - 7th June 2008

Solihull’s residents were encouraged last week to put themselves forward and help out in the community as part of National Volunteer Week (June 1-7).  A series of events were held in Solihull supported by vinvolved for Solihull, Sustain and the Volunteer Management Forum.  The week ended with vinvolved joining the funfilled Solihull carnival.

‘Picnic in the Park’ on 7th June celebrated National Volunteer Week in Leamington Spa.  The picnic was held at the Pump Room Gardens, Leamington Spa and there were up to 80 voluntary organisations from South Warwickshire who joined this national celebration of volunteering.   The event was organised to publicly thank local volunteers and highlight their contribution to local groups and the wider community.  Also, the day has encouraged residents to give up their time for a good cause.  The picnic was supported by vinvolved for Warwickshire.

Hear the Voice of Young People!

Six young people aged between 14 and 19 from Leamington Spa have produced a new magazine, with the guidance of WAYC youth workers.  The group of young people, not in education, employment or training (NEETS), were given the opportunity tackle local and global community issues through new media.   The issues that the group looked at included stereotyping, antisocial behaviour, identity, computer games, drugs, and ballroom dancing!

The publication – The Voice - was unveiled on February 28 following the 12-day course.

Congratulations to Mark Nockalls, Jess Pollitt, Zoe Rheams, Kayleigh Palmer and Bobbie Wilkins – the magazine is great!

All Different All EqualAll Different All Equal

WAYC has been included as a featured project in the All different All equal 'Cookbook'  we are on pages 121 -122 from this link http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/youth/fej/ADAE%20cookbook.pdf for our higly successful project in Kazan, Russia in Autumn 2007.

The Council of Europe initiative was launched in 1995 50 years after the end of World War II as a youth campaign with the three themes of diversity, human rights and participation. This was particularly aimed at reinforcing the fight against racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and intolerance.

Over Ten years later the campaign aims were still thought to be relevant and important and for this reason the council is running a re-launched campaign under the same banner of “All Different - All Equal”.
