During a WAYC Peer Mentoring project with a group of young mothers from Nuneaton and Bedworth the participants expressed an interest in producing a magazine that highlighted what it’s really like to be a young parent today. The group completed a Youth Opportunity Fund application and were successfully awarded funds to plan and produce a young parents magazine!
The participants then held several meetings with support from youth workers from WAYC where they discussed and planned appropriate articles, wrote and edited articles and designed the magazine on laptops.
Beans magazine is targeted toward young people; young people who are pregnant, young people in relationships considering pregnancy, young people with children and young people generally!! The magazine is wholly written by young parents, mothers and fathers, and highlights a number of aspects associated with being a young parent including telling parents, post-natal depression, midwives, old wives tales, benefits, birthing stories and more!
Beans magazine was distributed to youth centres, children centres, colleges, Connexions centres…any where young people can pick it up!
The producers of Beans magazine are keen to build upon its success and use what they have learnt to involve more young parents and reach more young people with further editions. They are now involved with fundraising and planning for this and Beans 2 is in progress.
