The Active Youth Project has again this year been involved in working with the young people of the Brunswick Ward area of South Leamington.

Throughout the year we have held our summer activities programme for 9 to 13 year olds involving disadvantaged and at risk young people from the area.

A varied programme involved Art, Archery, Kayaking, Sports and fun in the local parks and conservation areas. All these activities are based on all of the young people attending working together, forming friendships and building an understanding of each others needs.

Archery Class Summer 06Archery Class Summer 06Active Youth were also involved in delivering the Acumen Project working with young people involved in and at risk of Anti social Behaviour. It had been identified that there was a high volume of Anti Social Behaviour on the local Kingsway and Queens Way Housing Estates.

The project was set up to address the issues working with young people from the Brunswick ward looking at both effects not only on the local community but also the effects upon themselves.

Over the twelve week programme we worked with a group of 15 to 16 year olds identifying their needs and the needs of the local community. What the effects of anti social behaviour have on the members of the community and them. We looked at damage that can be caused by the misuse of drugs and alcohol.

The young people attending worked at planning their own residential, information sourcing, telephone calls, working together to achieve their goal. Through group discussion work it was found that they all had a common interest in fishing. This group of young people rarely move off the estate where they live, and this gave them  the opportunity as a group to take ownership of something, where they would have control of the outcome their work. This allowed this group to build self esteem and show what came be achieved by working together in a positive way.

The local community police also came for an open discussion the group to put their feelings to the group on what effects their actions were having on the community.

A very open and informative discussion developed between the young people and the police that ended with a lot common ground being made for the good of the area.

The senior members of the youth have been involved in a national event The 100 Mile Canoe Test. This allows the young people from the estate to meet other young people from across the country, who come together to Kayak 100 miles in for days. This event will take place again in May of 2007.

The 100 Mile took place last year involving training beginning February and accumulating in the test in May 2006. I took place on the River Tent in Nottinghamshire Active Youth will be working towards the National Water Sports Festival in June 2007. This a event that again brings together young people from across the country to meet and become involved in team work and forming friendships. The event takes place over a weekend involving, Sailing, Raft Building, White Water Rafting and Sail Boarding.
